Frequently Asked Questions

Let me start by asking you a few questions.

Have you ever had your student tutored at a "center"?

Have you ever watched through the window to see how much time your child recieves one-on-one attention?

Have you ever heard the noise level in the tutoring room?

How is Virginia Academics different from a learning center?

Most learning centers have set times for tutoring each day, tutor children in small groups, use a curriculum that is separate from the child's school curriculum, administer costly assessments to every student, and require long-term contracts. We are different in that our tutors come to your home, at a time that is convenient for you and your child. Sessions are always one-on-one and are customized to fit your child's needs. We do not use a prescribed tutoring program; instead, we use your child's school curriculum and design lessons that support and supplement what your child is learning. We will also communicate with your child's teacher if necessary (and with your permission) to be sure that your child is on the right track.

How is Virginia Academics different from online tutoring?

We provide tutors that go in person to the child's home. One-on-one instruction in the comfort of the child's home is the best way to help a struggling student discover techniques and methods that help them succeed in school.

Are assessments required before my child can be tutored?

No, diagnostic tests can cost up to $200.00 in a learning center environment, and are not a prerequisite for tutoring with Virginia Academics.

Does Virginia Academics provide a curriculum?

Our tutors work primarily with the student's school curriculum, to help the student catch up and keep up with school requirements. Your child must bring home the books and other class materials for each tutoring session. In some cases, our tutors will provide supplemental materials to reinforce what is being learned. We can also help you obtain any additional books or resources appropriate for your child's success.

Does tutoring always take place in my home?

Yes, we come to you at a time that is convenient for you. We do require that a parent or guardian be in the home for the entire tutoring session. If you do not want the tutor to come to your home, suitable alternatives will be suggested by our Director during the in-home consultation.

How do you ensure quality tutors?

We personally interview all tutors and conduct extensive background checks, including previous teaching/tutoring history, reference checks, and criminal background checks. Our tutors are certified teachers, substitute teachers, retired teachers, college graduates, or honors college students with at least two years of one-on-one tutoring experience. We also solicit feedback from every client regarding their experiences with our tutors, and use that information when deciding to continue using tutors in the future.

Will my child have the same tutor every week?

Yes, as long as both you and your tutor are happy with the arrangement. You will have one specific tutor matched with your child throughout your time with Virginia Academics.

What if I or my child does not like the tutor?

After the first session is complete, if you do not think the tutor was a good match for your child, you will not be charged for that session and another tutor will be found. If at any time you are dissatisfied with your tutor for any reason, we will substitute that tutor for another one that better meets your needs.

How often and for how long will my child require tutoring?

This is highly dependent on your child and your child's tutoring needs. We do not have long-term contracts. We require a minimum of two hours a week, without skipping weeks, and recommend a minimum of six weeks in order to begin seeing progress. However, if your child is very far behind or failing a subject, plan on two or three sessions a week until he or she is caught up again.

How long do I have to wait before my child can begin meeting with a tutor?

After the in-home consultation, our Director will contact one of our tutors within 48 hours. We will call to tell you about the tutor, and then the tutor will call to introduce himself or herself, get directions to your home, and establish a schedule that works for you.

My child is homeschooled. Can you help me?

Yes! We can provide a tutor to teach your child any or all subjects as needed.

I have more than one child. Can you tutor all of them at the same time?

No, all of our tutoring takes place through one-on-one sessions. We do not provide group tutoring.

My child has a learning disability or other special needs. Can you help me?

Yes, we have tutors who have training and certifications in Special Education. We will work in conjunction with your child's Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) to provide appropriate tutoring for your child.

Do you provide test preparation for the SAT and ACT exams?

Yes, we will help your student prepare for both exams. We highly recommend that you contact us at least six weeks before the test so our tutors have enough time to help the student prepare. While only one hour a week is required, two hours a week have proven more effective for test preparation.

What geographical areas do you service?

We have tutors available throughout Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, and Stafford Counties.

Do you accept credit cards?

Yes, we accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. At the in-home consultation, you can arrange to have your credit card charged automatically on a bi-weekly or monthly basis.

How do I get started?

Call our office at (540)408-3065 or complete the online form to have someone contact you. We will then set up a complimentary, in-home consultation to help us get to know you and your child. Please have all relevant schoolwork, progress reports, report cards, and testing results available for this meeting.
